Just because you don't fit the usual mold—like excelling in school or landing a fancy job—doesn't mean you’re out of the game. Find what you're good at, sharpen it, and push through the challenges. That’s how you become your best.
Jason Balabal’s journey reflects not just strength but a heart of gold, grounded in humility and purpose. Hailing from Tinoc, Ifugao, Jason has become a force in Philippine wrestling, earning recognition through sheer grit and determination. From hauling vegetables and rice up and down the mountains to lifting his opponents on the mat, Jason proves that true strength lies not only in muscle but in embracing one’s unique path.
Starting competitive sports at 21—when most athletes begin much younger—Jason’s rise was fueled by resilience. As a young boy, he often found himself compared to his academically gifted sister, but he discovered that his talents flourished elsewhere. During childhood, MILO inspired him to dream big, seeing athletes featured on the packs and TV commercials. A varsity scholarship followed, and national coaches soon saw his potential. This opened doors for him to train with top-tier athletes in Iran and South Korea, honing his skills through world-class coaching and intense practice.
Today, Jason stands among the Philippines' most decorated wrestlers, with three SEA Games gold medals and multiple silver and bronze wins. His dedication to consistent practice shone through even after a 12-year gap, proving that perseverance and discipline never fade.
Now, Jason is committed to giving back to his roots. Inspired by the support that shaped his success, he aims to uplift the youth of Tinoc by improving access to sports opportunities. Jason firmly believes that children in Ifugao have immense potential in sports, and he hopes to unlock that potential by sharing his insights from global training experiences. Beyond advocacy, he actively supports his community by donating to schools and barangays whenever they seek his help. Through these efforts, Jason hopes to raise the standard of sports development in the Philippines, empowering the next generation to pursue their dreams—just as he did.
